National Greyhound Day 2026

Saturday 30th May, 1-4pm Free Entry

Our annual National Greyhound Day event is in honour of Prior Henri De Becheton who, in 1348 managed to win the right to keep greyhounds at Birkenhead Priory. During this period all dogs had to have their paws cut or “lawed” so they were lame and couldn’t interfere with the hunt. Prior Henri refused and successfully claimed the right to keep dogs without this barbaric practice here at Birkenhead Priory. He was obviously a dog lover!

Activitites on the day will include:

Greyhound and Sighthound Parade. 1.30pm, meet on the grass in front of St Marys Tower to join in.

Best Dressed Sighthound Contest. Immediately after the Parade

Meet representatives from Home Run Hounds North West.

Refreshments will be served upstairs in the Refectory 2pm-4pm, pleae note this is cash only.

You are also welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy in our beautiful grounds.
