National Greyhound Day 2025

Saturday 31st May, 11am - 3pm. Free entry.

Calling all greyhounds, whippets, salukis and lurchers – you are cordially invited to bring your humans to celebrate National Greyhound Day at Birkenhead Priory!

Events on the day will include:

12.00pm – A Greyhound, Whippet, Lurcher & Saluki parade.

1.00pm – A best dressed sighthound contest with prizes and rosettes.

Representatives from The Greyhound Trust Mersey & Cheshire will be attending. Discover the wonderful work they do and learn all about adoption and rescuing of retired racing greyhounds and greyhounds/whippets in your local area.

There’ll be plenty of photo opportunities for dogs and humans alike.

Of course, ALL breeds of dogs are welcome to Birkenhead Priory – we kindly ask that they are kept on a leash.

Light refreshments will be served upstairs inside the monk’s Refectory from 11.00am to 3.00pm (cash only) or you can bring your own picnic to enjoy in our beautiful grounds.

This event is in honour of Prior Henri de Becheton, who successfully claimed the right to keep his beloved greyhounds and other dogs at Birkenhead Priory in 1348. During this period dogs were not allowed to be kept as they interfered with the hunt, which was all important at this time so this was quite an achievement for Prior Henri.
